Plastic Paradise: Accra and the fishing community of Nyanyano, Ghana

The fishing village of Nyanyano is nestled into the western corner of Langma Beach, Ghana. The community relies on fishing for their income, however the rise of single use plastics in Ghana is having an adverse effect on their daily catches. Fish numbers have dropped while the number of single use plastics has increased in the water and in their nets. The community is it’s own worst enemy as it continues to dump rubbish not too far from a stream on the edge of the village that runs into the sea. However with no infrastructure to collect the rubbish they are left with little choice, causing a self perpetuating cycle. Organisations on the ground in Ghana, like ‘Plastic Punch,’ are doing their best to organise beach cleans and educate the local population, but with little help from the Government it is an uphill struggle.
